A Little History

Almost 90% of adults who smoke regularly started smoking before the age of 18.

Eighty-eight (88) Floridians die everyday from a smoking
related illness.


Smoking costs the state of Florida roughly $10.4 billion every year in health care costs and lost productivity – a total roughly equal to 20% of the state’s annual budget (not including federal funds).

Advertising used to market candy flavored products downplay their potential for addiction and mislead the users.

Each day tobacco kills 1,200 Americans. That is more than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, drugs, fires, murders and suicide COMBINED.

The tobacco industry spends over $967.9 million each year to market their products in Florida, more than in any other state in the nation.

Tobacco is truly a global problem. Some five million people die from tobacco-caused diseases each year.

Secondhand smoke kills over 50,000 non-smokers a year
in the U.S.
 

Joe Camel – In the early 1990’s a 3 year old child was more likely to recognize the Joe Camel icon than Disney’s Mickey Mouse character.

Columbo and His Homies – Tobacco was first introduced as a product after Christopher Columbus and his parties interacted with the Native Americans when first exploring America. He shipped some back and it has become one of the most successful products of all time.

Cancer – Tobacco companies have known tobacco caused lung cancer since the 1950’s.  No action was taken until the late 1960’s when the warnings on the packs were published.

WWII – Tobacco products were given out by the tobacco industry to U.S. Soldiers as part of their rations. It gave the industry a huge new generation of addicted smokers.

Marlboro Man – The original Marlboro Man died from his tobacco addiction initiated from a modeling career with Marlboro. Many Marlboro men have shared his experience.

The M.S.A. – How BIG TOBACCO Got Busted – Because of all the lies and deceitful practices by the tobacco industry, 46 states came together and sued the industry. It was the start of a lot of the prevention efforts we see today.
